Biography

Athanasios Papadimitriou was born in 2000 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He has received his degrees in Harmony (2016 – class of Stefanos Ntinapogias), Counterpoint and Fugue (2020 and 2022 – class of Vasilis Kitsos) with Excellent and his Piano Diploma (2022 – class of Fani Karagianni) with Excellent unanimously and distinction of First Prize from Philippos Nakas Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He is also a graduate of Music School of Thessaloniki (2018) and holds an Integrated Master in Music Studies with specialization field in Composition (2023 – class of Christos Samaras) with Excellent from the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he graduated as a valedictorian. He is a doctoral candidate at the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, under the supervision of Kostas Tsougras (since 2023).

He has participated in masterclasses and open courses with renowned composers such as Stavros Lantsias, Christos Hatzis, Mack Dieter and others.

As a composer, he has collaborated with many performers and ensembles such as: Choir of M.S.Th. under the direction of Angeliki Krisila (2018 – 8th Festival of Children and Youth Choirs organized by the Thessaloniki Concert Hall), Trio Salonic@rte (2019 – Sunday Mornings organized by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra), Contra Tempo (2021 – 11th Contemporary Music Lab organized by Thessaloniki Concert Hall / 2022 – New Sounds Week organized by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and School of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Vladimiros Symeonidis (2022 – New Sounds Week organized by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and School of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and many others.

As a pianist, he is particularly concerned with the study of contemporary music and he has performed works by Greek composers of the 20th and 21st century in various occasions.

As a teacher, he has taught at the Contemporary Conservatory of Thessaloniki (from 2023 to 2024) and he teaches Piano and Music Theory at Philippos Nakas Conservatory (since 2020). Currently, he teaches Harmony at the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He is a member of the Hellenic Musicological Society and the Greek Composers’ Union (since 2024).

2023 | Bronze Medal Winner – Finalist at the Global Music Awards in category “Contemporary Classical” for his work Two Pieces, for guitar and piano (2022).

2022 | Distinction at the 9th Dimitris Dragatakis Composition Competition organized by Greek Composers’ Union for his work Apologia II – Sonata, for viola and piano (2022).

2022 | Selection of his work Elegy, for orchestra (2022) after Call for Scores for the New Sounds Week organized by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and School of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

2022 | Distinction at the Composition Competition for voice “1821, Greek Revolution and Set Poetry” organized by the Greek Composers’ Union in collaboration with the Greek National Opera for his work Ode Ekti [XVI] Ai Euhai, A. Kalvos, for soprano and piano (2021).
